Image as Preservation was a workshop developed for the Oleander School for Negro Publishers, coordinated and led by MacKenzie River, which centered on preserving identities through imagery (printmaking) and narratives, specifically related to the Black queer and trans community, utilizing readily available resources (i.e., printed handouts, books from Red Emma’s). The goal of this workshop was to provide participants with basic printmaking/image-making techniques through monotypes so that they walk away with greater self-efficacy for preserving and recording theirlived experiences (i.e. culture, heritage, traditions, language, pastimes, spiritual practices and rituals, religion) or those of their family and community(ies).
